Mental Health for the Holidays

We have entered into the holiday season, a time we intentionally set time aside to spend with our families and share gifts. It is also the time of year we celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Many of us will be celebrating and spending time with family, while others will have difficulties embracing the holidays. Let’s be prayerful for those persons. I want to offer some mental health coping skills and encourage those who are battling with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations (thoughts).

  • Isolation is not good in fact it increases the intensity of your depression.
    • Plan scheduled time to come out of your isolation period and spend time with your loved ones. It will be a positive distraction and a chance to fellowship one with another.

  • Get out and get out some sunlight and fresh air.
    • Sunlight increases a chemical call serotonin that helps with mood stabilization for depression and anxiety.

  • Reach out for assistance if you find yourself overwhelmed and talk to a trusted friend, family member, church member or professional.

Scripture Reference: Philippians 4:6-7

Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
